The Mermaid of Colorado National Monument rests on a smooth, sunlit boulder, surrounded by the region’s striking red rock formations. Her bra is made of local wildflowers, and claret cup cacti—the official state cactus—bloom around her in bright red. Her tail glimmers with the colors of a rainbow trout, a nod to the fish found in nearby streams and rivers. Behind her, the Monument glows under a classic Colorado sunset, filling the sky with warm colors that stretch across the horizon.
This mermaid honors the Ute Tribe, whose cultural and historical ties to this land run deep. At her side is a small white songbird, singing softly—a tribute to Chipeta, respected Ute leader and the second wife of Chief Ouray. Together, they watch the landscape, quietly honoring its history and beauty.

The Grand Valley Mermaids is a collaborative series by local artists Lily Cain and Lynnea Tai, featuring vibrant paintings and hand-crafted malas that celebrate five distinct regions of Colorado’s Grand Valley. Rooted in symbolism and reverence for the land, the work honors our shared stewardship of nature—from rivers and canyons to orchards and plateaus. Inspired by the local “dirt curse” legend, the artists reinterpret the tale with a feminine energy, focusing on connection rather than conflict. The mermaids embody guardianship, harmony, and respect, reflecting the region’s deep Native history, agricultural heritage, and natural beauty.
